The promise Simeon saw fulfilled
Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to God in the temple. Luke describes Simeon as righteous and devout: the Holy Spirit had revealed that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Messiah. Led by the Spirit, he entered the temple and took Jesus in his arms (Luke 2:22–28). [1]
Simeon was waiting for the consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25). GotQuestions explains this expression as the promised Messiah bringing comfort to God's people. Here, consolation means relief from grief or trouble; Simeon's expectation concerned the one who would comfort Israel. [2]
His praise extended beyond Israel: he called Jesus God's salvation, prepared in the sight of all nations, and “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel” (Luke 2:30–32). [1]
Simeon's response was peace: having seen what God promised, he could now die in peace (Luke 2:26–30). His words express the fulfillment of the personal promise that he would see the Messiah before his death.
