A "learner" or "pupil" who studied the life and teachings of a master teacher. The Gospels mention disciples of John the Baptist, the Pharisees, Moses, and Jesus. In the Gospels, "the disciples" sometimes refers to the large numbers of people who sincerely followed Jesus; more often, it refers to the twelve he chose as an inner group and whom he appointed apostles.
