Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue, probably in Capernaum. A synagogue ruler was responsible for building maintenance, administration, and supervision of worship. Because Jairus was held in such high regard, it would have been unusual for a person of his stature in the community to "fall at the feet of Jesus", an itinerant preacher, and ask for help.
