Elizabeth, or Elisabeth, was the wife of Zechariah (in Hebrew) (Zacharias in Greek) and the mother of John the Baptist. She was a descendant of Aaron, Moses' brother. Both she and her husband were considered righteous before God. They were childless until well advanced in years, when an angel foretold to Zechariah the birth of John. Elisabeth was the cousin of Mary (the mother of Jesus).
